Three changes matter this year.

First, ETIAS launches in Q4 2026. Americans, Brits, Canadians, and 60 other visa-exempt nationalities will need a 20 euro online authorization before visiting 30 European countries. Not required yet, but late-2026 trips should plan for it.

Second, the EU's Entry/Exit System is now live at Schengen borders. Fingerprints and face scans replace passport stamps, and your 90-in-180 days are counted automatically. Casual overstaying just got much harder to hide.

Visa Rules Changed in 2026: Read the Requirements by Country Before You Book

Third, the UK's ETA is now mandatory for visa-exempt visitors: 16 pounds, applied online before travel.

The lesson: visa rules are not static. A trip you took visa-free in 2024 may need an authorization in 2026. Read the requirements by country within a month of booking, not a year before.
